Music to Soothe SPCA Hounds |
September 2011
SPCA Tampa Bay is working to provide a less stressful environment for our shelter animals. A recently installed sound system is broadcasting soothing music throughout the kennels in an effort to help the animals relax.
Research has shown that noise pollution can be stressful to animals and humans alike. The uproar of a kennel of barking dogs can result in over-stimulated and stressed dogs. Like us, dogs can be comforted by being exposed to soft, slow music. Studies show that dogs respond to different types of music with increased or decreased heart rates, brain waves and breathing patterns. Simpler sounds bring about a more relaxed state, in both dogs and people. The music chosen for the kennel is based on the science of psychoacoustics and is designed to aid in comforting dogs who may be stressed.
Stop and Listen the next time you’re in the Largo facility.

FELINE ADOPTERS NEEDED
SPCA Tampa Bay bursting at the seams with cats! |
|
Largo, FL (December 8, 2011) — SPCA Tampa Bay is bringing back its free adult cat (1-year+) adoption special this holiday season. (Adopters pay only a $10 microchip fee.) Kittens are adopt-one-get-one for the regular $45 fee.
Typically by December there are fewer felines awaiting new homes at the shelter. Kitten season has expanded this year due to warmer weather. Changing economic factors have left more owners with fewer options. Whatever the reasons, more than 150 cats and kittens are seeking a second chance at life.
“Our shelter is now the only facility in Pinellas that admits all owned felines, regardless of health or temperament, without charging an admission fee,” commented Martha Boden, SPCA CEO. “We are asking the public to help by adopting and we’re asking people who need to give up their cats to consider waiting until we have more room.”
This adoption value includes vaccinations (including rabies), spaying or neutering, 30-day free pet insurance, and a free Cat Talk Class, a crash course in frisky feline behavior. Adoption specials are good through 2011.

Congratulations to
Phyllis Combs
for most weight lost in August |
|
This is a promotion for people who adopt a cat and a contest for feline volunteers.
Someone interested in adopting a cat can reduce the adoption fee by an amount equal to the weight of that cat.
The regular adoption fee for a cat is $35 minus the cat's weight = the adopt fee paid
Volunteers track the weight of the cats who get adopted. The volunteer who helps adopt cats with the most cumulative weight per month will be the "Winner of the Month."
This contest continues through October. There are winners each month and a grand prize winner overall.
Good Luck to all of you. |
